Maguire quits Midconsort board following disputes

FORMERTravelcall chief executive Brendan Maguire has resigned from the Midconsort board, blaming political in-fighting.

Maguire, proprietor of Quartz Travel in Glasgow and a city-breaks tour operation called Weekenders, has been on the board since the two consortia merged in January, as exclusively reported in Travel Weekly December 20 1999.

“There are one or two people who are pursuing their own self interests rather than the interests of Midconsort but they are in the minority.”

Maguire said the appointment of Mike Gates as managing director in May had not influenced his decision and said he would remain a member of Midconsort, at least for the moment.

He has no plans to lead the 60 former Travelcall branches out of Midconsort, believing Midconsort will become the preferred option for independents once stability is restored.

Maguire also criticised Midconsort’s Midlands bias saying it needed to be “less parochial” in itsoutlook to meet the needs of other travel agents inthe UK.
