Heading for a bad summer

Not only has the foot and mouth crisis devastated inbound tourism, it’s beginning to affect agents selling overseas holidays.

One Devon agent described how bookings came to a virtual standstill just two days after the first case of the disease was confirmed in his area (see back page story).

Another agent told us the last two months have been the worst in his company’s 50-year history. Despite being located in a rural area that has so far escaped the epidemic, farmers are tightening their purse strings.

The Government hopes the crisis will be over soon, but it’s going to be a bad summer for some retailers.
