1. Victoria Peak tram
A tram ride from Central Hong Kong to the top of 550-metre-high Victoria Peak is an absolute must. Go early to avoid the queues for the funicular that ascends through lush greenery, feeling almost vertical at times, to rise above Hong Kong Island’s densely packed skyscrapers.
The reward is unrivalled panoramic views of the city’s futuristic skyline and iconic harbour, as well as a choice of circular walks around the Peak.
2. Kai Tak Sports Park
Kai Tak Sports Park – a 50,000-capacity sports and entertainment centre, sprawling food hall and luxury shopping mall – is Hong Kong’s newest and largest attraction, set to open later this year. It’s located on the site of the former airport.
3. Kowloon markets
Take a traditional wooden Star Ferry (pictured, top; 50p each way for the upper deck) from Central Pier on orderly Hong Kong Island to the frenetic chaos of Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, where bustling markets sell everything you could ever want to eat, use or wear.
Haggling with the fast-talking but friendly stallholders is all part of the fun; start by politely offering a third of the asking price and pretend to walk away if you want to drive a hard bargain.
4. Edward Youde Aviary
Hong Kong Park, close to the Peak Tram’s Central Terminus, is an enormous oasis in the heart of one of the busiest cities on Earth. Its blend of modern architectural design with the natural landscape has won many international awards.
A highlight is the Edward Youde Aviary, the largest in southeast Asia, which has a raised walkway, allowing visitors to walk freely among more than 530 birds.
5. Nature reserves
Despite its reputation as a highly urbanised city, more than three-quarters of Hong Kong is countryside, with over 40% of it a designated nature reserve. A 10-minute taxi ride from just about anywhere will take you to a walking trail. Directions for many routes, including a two-hour hike to Mount High West that offers majestic sunset views, are online at discoverhongkong.com
