Six people have died after a tourist submarine sank in the Red Sea off the coast of Hurghada, according to the local governor.
Amr Hanafy said 39 people were rescued after the vessel went down this morning, the BBC has reported.
The submarine, understood to be operated by Sindbad Submarines, happened about a kilometre from the harbour.
Hanafy, the Red Sea governor, said there were 45 passengers on board, plus five Egyptians. The passengers were from Russia, India, Norway and Sweden, he said, with all six who died from Russia.
A Russian official in Hurghada, Viktor Voropaev, said two children were among those who died.
Sources told the BBC that nine passengers were injured.
A safety warning was recently issued by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) after a series of deadly accidents involving liveaboard dive vessels in the Red Sea.
The MAIB report, published last month, said there had been a total of 16 accidents in the last five years, with UK nationals among those who had died.
