Big four asked to set global work standards

OPERATORS have been urged to vet working conditions

of their suppliers to ensure tourism employees aren’t
poorly treated.

A Tourism Council report claimed large numbers of global tourism
employees suffer from poor pay, long hours and treacherous safety
conditions.

In conjunction with the Trades Union Congress, it wants the big
four to set the standards for auditing employment conditions in the
hope other operators will follow.

Federation of Tour Operators director-general Andy Cooper
slammed the recommendation as unworkable.

He said: “Operators already stipulate suppliers have to comply
with local laws in their contracts, there’s not much more
they can really do.”

ABTA chief executive Ian Reynolds said: “We don’t disagree
with the general direction but we are concerned about

the practicalities.”
