AITO toughens stance on under performers

THE Association of Independent Tour Operators has revised its constitution so under performing members can be denied membership.

AITO director Noel Josephides said members voted in the annual general meeting on Tuesday (April 4) to give the association the power to prevent an operator from renewing its membership if it was felt it no longer met AITO’s standards.

He said this redresses the current rules which allow the association to vet a company before it joins but gives it little power to do anything about an operator which has signed up but is attracting complaints.

Josephides said: “We want the ability to say to companies we don’t think they’re suitable for the association and we don’t want them to renew their membership. If they’re not making the grade, they shouldn’t be in the association.”

Jospehides said three other votes were taken at the meeting in the Copthorne Tara Hotel in London which all ratified informal policy at the association.

Affiliates from the association’s invited members club, which makes room for companies not predominantly owned by their management, will be allowed to hold officerships. Both honorary memberships and social memberships will be also available for individuals.
