Romance not dead for over-50s – 2 Nov 2006

The holiday romance is alive and well, even for holidaymakers over the age of 50, according to research by Grey market specialist Saga.

More than 2,000 adults were surveyed by BMRB of whom one in five of those over the age of 50 admitted to having had a holiday romance.

And, it seems, in many cases these are more than just flings with one in ten surveyed saying their relationship has stood the test of time and resulted in marriage.

The research, carried out by Saga Travel Insurance, also found 15% of people admitted to having a fling when with someone else, Spain was the most popular foreign destination for romance to flourish although the UK was first for the over 50s.

A third of those over the age of 50 said they had their first holiday romance when in their late teens although Saga estimates 252,000 of the 10.5 million Brits who have had a holiday romance were over the age of fifty.
