Climate protests target executive flights – 17 Aug 2007

Demonstrators targeted two airports used by corporate jets yesterday as protests focused on aviation’s contribution to climate change stepped up ahead of a weekend of action at Heathrow.

Ten people were arrested at Biggin Hill airport in Kent after trying to block access. Other protestors targeted Farnborough in Hampshire. Both airports reported operating normally

A spokesman for the protestors at Biggin Hill said it was a demonstration against “the super-rich who are putting up two fingers to the rest of us by flying in the most inefficient way”.

Protestors continued to gather at the climate change camp outside Heathrow as the airport’s managing director Mark Bullock warned of possible disruption to aviation company offices and of a risk of demonstrators leaving unattended bags in terminal buildings.

However, camp organisers accused Heathrow operator BAA of scaremongering. A spokesman said: “There is no quarrel with the ordinary passenger going on holiday.”
