FTO to decide on prospective members next month

The Federation of Tour Operators will meet next month to decide whether to expand following talks with prospective members.

However, director-general Andy Cooper said: “We are not working to any deadline. We are talking to a number of tour operators who approached us about joining.”

He declined to name the companies, but confirmed they fulfil the FTO criteria of a minimum annual turnover of more than £20 million.

Some of the suitors may be members of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, which represents smaller companies.

“They are not necessarily AITO members,” said Cooper. But he insisted: “We are not talking about poaching members from another organisation.

“We are not actively saying we want to recruit anyone. We have always talked to operators wanting to join. But our bonding criteria were a big hurdle in the past.”

Members used to be required to lodge a bond equal to 27% of their non-ATOL licensable turnover. This was revoked two years ago in line with similar changes at ABTA.

The FTO recently ended talks on a merger with ABTA.
