No immediate damage has been reported after an earthquake struck off the coast of southern Greece this morning.
The 5.5-magnitude quake was reported at a depth of about 19 miles, about 43 miles south-west of Kalamata at 8.15am, according to the US Geological Survey.
The closest settlement is the village of Methoni, with a population of 1,165 in the south of the country.
The Peloponnese area is popular with tourists.
Dimitris Kafantaris, mayor of the town of Pylos located north of the epicentre, told local media: “The earthquake had a long duration and initially we were worried.”
However, no injuries or damage had been reported so far.
