Problems with rubbish collections in Corfu are being resolved, with many of the roads now clear of refuse for the first time in months.
The trade had called on Greek tourism authorities to take swift action to clear up the dumped rubbish, which had built up to “unprecedented levels” on the popular island since the closure of a full-up landfill site in February.
Greek National Tourism Organisation UK director Emy Anagnostopoulou confirmed the problem had been largely sorted out.
She said: “Αction has already been taken by the competent authorities in regards to waste management and the issue is being resolved.
“The collection process is being concluded in the city of Corfu. The entire task throughout the island is underway and expected to be completed within the week.”
Tour operator Sunvil said reports from its resort representatives showed the problem was now under control with the authorities embarking on a major clean-up in the last week.
Bulldozers have been out clearing rubbish and extra remaining refuse is being collected by hand, said managing director Chris Wright.
Wright said its office in Corfu had informed him that new arrivals “would not know there was a problem”, with most areas now clear of refuse sacks.
Penny Kyprianou, head of product and contracting, Jetline Holidays, who was in Corfu on business, said she saw rubbish trucks out collecting refuse at the end of last week.
She said: “I can honestly say that it didn’t affect my visit. I saw trucks picking the rubbish up but there was no visible rubbish bins near hotels.”
