The Foreign Office (FCO) has issued a series of warnings ahead of next week’s UEFA Champions League final in Rome.
The match, on May 27, between Manchester United and FC Barcelona is expected to draw 30,000 United fans to the city, even though the club was only allocated 19,500 tickets.
The FCO has issued a number of warnings to British fans, following fears that Rome’s hardcore football fans, who have been accused of violence in the past, could take the opportunity to launch further attacks.
The FCO is particularly warning United fans not to take the metro to the Piazzale Flaminio or to use the Ponte Duca d’Aosta bridge, as there has been trouble on both these routes to the stadium in the past.
Fans are advised to take the free coach transfer service, which will depart from the Villa Borghese at the top of the Via Veneto. The FCO is urging fans not to walk to the stadium, take taxis or other public transport.
Fans have also been advised to avoid the Campo de Fiori, where trouble has broken out on past match days.
