BAA prepared for possible disruption from Climate Camp protestors

BAA is unconcerned that possible protests organised by Climate Camp will cause disruption at Heathrow this weekend.

Eco-protestors have been gathering at six meeting points across the capital today before converging on Blackheath Common, where they will hold an eight-day-long camp designed to highlight sustainable living.

Already the media is claiming the camp will be used as a base for direct action and protests against various government offices and company headquarters across the capital.

Heathrow is also thought to be a target of the protestors, particularly after August 2007, when a Climate Camp was organised just a few hundred metres from the airport while eco-warriors have long campaigned against the damage caused by aviation.

Any protests this weekend would come at one of the airport’s busiest periods – about 842,000 passengers are expected to depart or arrive during the bank holiday weekend.

A spokeswoman for BAA said staff were prepared for the worst, adding: “We support peaceful protests, but any action that would disrupt passengers is irresponsible.

“We do have contingency plans for all eventualities at Heathrow, and we don’t expect disruption this weekend for passengers.”
