Plans to open a Legoland in Sichuan, western China, have been announced with the resort scheduled to open by 2023.
Parent company Merlin Entertainments has entered into a partnership agreement with Global Zhongjun Cultural Tourism Development to build and operate the resort.
Details on attractions are thin at this time, however Merlin has confirmed the resort will operate two fully-themed Legoland Hotels, with an estimated capacity of 500 rooms.
The resort will be located in the Tianfu New Area in the city of Meishan, which is about 60km south of Chengdu.
John Jakobsen, chief development officer of Merlin Entertainments said: “Sichuan Province has a strong tradition of welcoming people from all over, which aligns closely to our values as a business. Within it, Chengdu, Meishan and the Tianfu New Area is developing at a rapid pace driven by investment, enterprise and, increasingly, its popularity as a tourist destination.”
The park will be Merlin’s eleventh Legoland park following the announcement of Legoland New York, due to open in 2020, and Legoland Korea which is scheduled for 2022.
Legoland Sichuan is the first Legoland Resort to be announced in China.
