Liverpool John Lennon hits 580k passengers in record August

August was the busiest month in the Liverpool John Lennon airport’s 78-year history as it handled 580,000 passengers.

Increased numbers of holidaymakers helped the airport break the previous record of just over 575,000 set in August 2007.

The surge has been aided by budget carriers easyJet and Ryanair operating to more summer sun destinations with a number of new holiday resorts featured for the first time.

Around 81,000 passengers travelled through the airport on 568 flights over the August Bank Holiday weekend alone, surpassing the airport’s own passenger predictions.

During a two hour peak early on Bank Holiday Monday, more than 2,200 passengers passed through a new security area and into the airport’s expanded departure lounge.

Growing numbers of travellers are also using the airport to fly with KLM to Amsterdam Schiphol airport to make onward connections

Craig Richmond, CEO of parent company Peel Airports, said: “Even we have been surprised by the levels of growth seen in passenger numbers choosing to fly off during the summer months from Liverpool.

“Two weeks in the sun clearly remains very important for families in particular throughout the north west, despite the recession.”
