Tributes paid to ‘industry character’ Angelo Carraro

Warm tributes have been paid following the death of former Carefree Travel chief executive Angelo Carraro at the age of 76.

A long-term Abta board member, he also served on the association’s membership committee.

Born in Venice, Carraro spent more than 50 years in the travel industry and built up Italy specialist Carefree Travel before its sale in 2007.

He also worked for Swan Hellenic and was managing director of Barry Aikman Travel.

Membership committee chair Noel Joesephides said: “Angelo was a true travel industry character – there are few such personalities left.

“He was always there to cheer us up. Our thoughts are with his family.’

Abta membership and financial protection director John de Vial added: “Angelo was a good friend and supporter of Abta, the team and the work of the membership committee.

“A kind man who always had time for everyone. He was thoughtful and supportive of members, but also a good judge of when someone was trying it on.

“A gentleman and a character who will be missed very much.”

Nigel Lingard, vice-chair of the membership committee, said: “He was still active as a member of Abta’s membership committee, having been in the travel business for 50 years.

“His primary business was group travel and Italian self-catering programmes through the company he created, Carefree Travel.

“He was a staunch Abta supporter, serving in several capacities including tour operator council and London regional.”
