California Disney to open new attraction

A new $1.1 billion attraction is being opened by Walt Disney at its park in Anaheim, California this week.

Cars Land, based on the company’s animated Cars movies, is the centrepiece of a five-year redevelopment of Disney’s California Adventure park, which is adjacent to its Disneyland site.

Cars Land, the largest new development at the site for several years, is the result of collaboration between Disney’s Imagineering group and John Lasseter, chief executive at Pixar and Walt Disney Animation Studios.

The 12-acre area opens tomorrow (Friday) with three new rides and a re-creation of the fictional town of Radiator Springs on Route 66.

“If you’re a little kid and you just want to have that visceral enjoyment … you’ll have that, but if you’re a Disney-phile and you really want to get those deep, deep, deep stories, they’re here too,” said Lisa Girolami, senior show producer of Walt Disney Imagineering, on a recent tour.
