Thailand joins red list as seven countries turn green

Seven countries including Canada are to be added to the government’s green list while Thailand and Montenegro will join the red list.

The government has confirmed the changes, which will come into effect from 4am on Monday August 30.

No countries have joined the amber list at the latest of the traffic light list updates, which now take place every three weeks.

Along with Canada, European destinations Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Switzerland, Liechtenstein and the Azores will move from amber to green.

Travellers from these destinations will not have to quarantine regardless of whether they are fully vaccinated, but will still need to take pre-departure and day 2 tests and complete a passenger locator form.

Arrivals into the UK from Thailand and Montenegro from Monday will need to isolate for 10 days in a managed quarantine facility and follow the necessary testing requirements. Hotel quarantine cost from £2,285.

The Department for Transport said high rates combined with lower levels of published genomic surveillance in Thailand and Montenegro than other countries, mean that an outbreak of a new variant or existing variants of concern or variants under investigation cannot be easily identified before it is imported and seeded across the UK.

The Scottish government has made the same updates to its traffic light lists.
