Concordia couple demand €2m in damages

A British couple who survived the Costa Concordia disaster are demanding a combined €2 million in damages for stress.

Mandy Rodford, from Rochester, was giving evidence at the trail of Francesco Schettino, the captain of the ship which hit rocks off the Italian island of Giglio in 2012.

The collision prompted a chaotic evacuation of the ship’s 4,200 passengers and crew in which 32 people lost their lives.

The Telegraph reports that Rodford had been celebrating her fourth wedding anniversary with her husband, John. The couple fled as the ship began to take on water.

The couple are each seeking €1 million in compensation, having been listed as suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder in court documents.

In court Mr Rodford said that Costa Crociere had not provided the passengers with information on evacuating the ship. The exercise was planned for the day after the crash, he said.

Mrs Rodford told the court: “Costa Crociere has to suffer as we have suffered and continue to suffer. We nearly lost our lives.

Schettino, who is accused of manslaughter and abandoning ship, has blamed poor quality maps and a second official for ignoring his instructions, the Telegraph reports.

Costa has paid a €1 million fine and is offering compensation to passengers.

One passenger told the court earlier this week he had been offered €17,000 in compensation.
