British holidaymakers have been warned against all but essential travel to parts of the Kenyan coast following a series of deadly attacks.
In upgraded travel advice, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said travellers should avoid Lamu County and areas of Tana River County, north of the Tana River.
The FCO said Britons “should consider whether you have an essential reason to remain. If not, you should leave the area”.
At least 85 people have been reported to have been killed in attacks in June and July in Lamu and Tana River counties on the Kenyan coast, the FCO said.
Islamist group Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
There is a “high threat” from terrorism, including kidnapping, in Kenya, according to the FCO.
It advises against all but essential travel to low incomes areas of the capital Nairobi, excluding transit through Nairobi airport.
Thomson and First Choice evacuated around 500 holidaymakers and cancelled flights to Mombasa until November following previous FCO advice against travel to Mombasa island and nearby coastal districts.
