Man sectioned after Manchester bomb alert

A man arrested on suspicion of making a hoax bomb threat on a flight to Manchester airport has been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, according to reports.

The Qatar Airways Airbus A330 from Doha was escorted in to Manchester by an RAF Typhoon on Tuesday following information received by the pilot from a passenger.

Police said the pilot had been handed a note about a possible device on board.

Armed police boarded the aircraft 269 passengers and 13 crew on board and arrested a 47-year-old man from the northwest area.

All flights in and out of the airport were suspended for about 25 minutes.

The RAF confirmed Typhoon aircraft were launched from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire as part of its “quick reaction alert role” when a pilot requested assistance.

Operations at the airport resumed at about 2pm on Tuesday.
