Bermuda faces being hit by for one of the most powerful storms in recent years.

Hurricane Gonzalo is heading for the island with wind speeds topping 125 miles per hour and is expected to hit tomorrow (Friday).

The storm was listed as a Category 3 hurricane after briefly reaching Category 4 status earlier when wind speeds reached 130 mph, before weakening slightly.

Bermuda is now under a hurricane warning. Gonzalo is expected to cause powerful, gusty winds, heavy rains and flooding as it closes in.

The storm hit the Virgin Islands and other parts of the eastern Caribbean on Monday, causing some property damage and power outages.

Hurricane Gonzalo is heading towards Bermuda as residents cope with the aftermath of Sunday’s Tropical Storm Fay.

More than 1,000 homes remained without power yesterday and homeowners worked to repair damaged roofs.

The government called out 200 soldiers of the Bermuda Regiment to help with clean up efforts on the island of roughly 70,000 people.

In an updated travel advisory, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “You should monitor the progress of storms on the Bermuda Weather Service and National Hurricane Centre websites, and follow the advice of the local authorities.

“On current projections Hurricane Gonzalo may affect Bermuda from around October 17.”

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Ana in the Pacific is threatening to strike the Hawaiian islands by the weekend, bringing winds of up to 70mph.

The FCO said: “Tropical Storm Ana is forecast to intensify and affect the Hawaiian islands from Friday. Strong winds, heavy rain and flash flooding is possible.

“You should monitor radio and TV stations for weather reports and follow the advice of local authorities.”
