Bermuda’s airport reopened yesterday afternoon as the island began a clear up after being hit by Hurricane Gonzalo on Friday with rain and 110mph winds.
Only minor injuries were reported in what was the strongest storm to hit the island in a decade. It was the second storm in a week to hit the island.
Gonzalo caused power cuts to 31,200 homes, although two-thirds of people had their electricity restored by Saturday afternoon.
Cruise ship calls to the island scheduled for yesterday and today (Monday) have been cancelled as a result of the hurricane. Celebrity Infinity remains on schedule to arrive on Wednesday, according to the Bermuda Tourism Authority.
LF Wade international airport resumed operations at 5pm local time after a causeway, the main road serving the airport, was reopened yesterday afternoon.
The island’s public ferry service has resumed its normal schedule and bus services will begin once a roads assessment of all routes is completed.
The majority of hotels in Bermuda are open and are able to accept guests but the BTA said: “Visitors with trips planned to Bermuda should contact their airline and hotel to confirm the specifics of their travel arrangements.”
BTA chief executive Bill Hanbury said: “Once again Bermuda has shown it is built to last in the face of severe weather like Hurricane Gonzalo.
“The co-operation of the public and private sectors along with the tenacity of Bermuda’s people is putting this island paradise back on its feet at incredible speed.
“All of us are ready to get back to work doing what we do best: welcoming visitors.”
