British travellers to Belgium have been warned to remain vigilant after an anti-terror raid in which two suspected Islamist militants were killed.
The caution came in updated travel advice from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office last night as Belgian authorities increased the national threat level for the whole of the country.
It follows a counter-terrorism police operation yesterday in Verviers, eastern Belgium.
The suspects were shot dead after they opened fire on police with automatic weapons on Thursday evening.
Officials say they had returned from Syria and planned imminent attacks on police targets. Another suspect was wounded before being arrested, the BBC reported.
Searches were also carried out overnight in Brussels and surrounding towns.
The FCO said: “You should continue to be vigilant and follow the security advice of the Belgian authorities.
“If you need to contact the emergency services in Belgium call 112.”
The incident comes a week after attacks in and around Paris that killed 17 people. Belgian media has reported that some of the weapons used in those attacks were bought in Brussels.
