THEGovernment has recommended Stansted Airport increase its take-off and landing movements to 185,000 a year.
The increase from the current 120,000 limit will allow Stansted to expand to a 15m annual capacity. Present restrictions restrict the airport to 8m.
Minister for transport in London Glenda Jackson made the announcement in Parliament last Wednesday following a three-month Government study into Stansted’s requirements (Travel Weekly January 27). Stansted managing director John Stent said the airport’s owner BAA had pledged £200m to fund demand for improved infrastructure to meet capacity rises.
Stent said building work starts next year on new facilities. These will lead to the creation of 1,000 jobs annually.
Two extra satellite terminals and extensions to the main terminal are planned for passengers.
