Almost 700 flights have been cancelled after an ash cloud closed Bali airport.

The Indonesian resort island’s Ngurah Rai airport will be closed until Thursday morning and will only re-open after a re-evaluation of the situation.

“A total of 692 flights have been cancelled,” Reuters reported airport authorities as saying.

Virgin Australia, Jetstar and AirAsia are among the airlines affected.

Mount Rinjani on the nearby island of Lombok has been spewing ash since last weekend.

Thousands of people were stranded on Bali for several days during the peak July holiday period due to ash from a different active volcano, east of Denpasar.
