Take full Advantage and leave Airtours to its own business

When we learned of the Advantage/Airtours franchise negotiations I was pleased we had already disposed of our four high-street branches (retaining one other non-high-street branch). I considered that such a set-up could not possibly operate to the best advantage of both parties due to the conflicting interests of Airtours with its existing travel agencies.

Once it was announced that around two-thirds of the membership had opted out of participation in the franchise, it was clear that it would always be an uphill struggle to satisfy Airtours’ expectations.

The initial legal expenses and administration time, effort and delay must have proved costly for all parties. With hindsight it is a great pity that the old adage “when in doubt – two feet out” was not adopted at the outset, especially as the Advantage team led by Ron Muir had performed so well to the benefit of all members prior to the initial negotiations.

My clear advice is to get back to basics. Forget Airtours and the whole team should do its utmost for the full benefit of the entire membership once again. Who knows, we may choose to enter the high-street business again.
