Ambassador ship forced to shelter as hurricane strikes Canada

Ambassador Cruise Line ship Ambience was forced to miss ports as it took shelter as Hurricane Fiona battered the Atlantic coast of Canada.

The ship stayed in port in St John’s, Newfoundland for two days and missed calls into Halifax and Sydney, citing safety concerns.

Ambience is sailing on a 34-night Grand Canada, Greenland and Iceland itinerary which left London Tilbury on September 12.

In an update on Twitter on Friday, the line said: “The health and safety of our guests and crew is of paramount importance and reluctantly we have taken the decision it is not safe for Ambience to sail this evening or tomorrow due to Hurricane Fiona’s predicted path north towards the southeast of Canada.

“Therefore sadly, we have no other option but to cancel Ambience’s next two ports of call at Halifax and Sydney and stay in the shelter at St John’s until the weather has passed.

“Guests will still be able to freely get on and off the ship over the next couple of days in St John’s, and our current plan is to depart on Sunday.

“We can only apologise for any inconvenience caused to our guests on board and we hope they understand this was unavoidable and outside of our control due to the current severe weather conditions.”

Fiona was downgraded from a hurricane to a tropical storm after carrying winds of 99mph across parts of five provinces, washing away homes and downing power lines.

At least one person reportedly died after being washed out to sea in Newfoundland.

The country’s military is being deployed to help clear trees and roads.

Fiona earlier struck Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, with many still left without power or running water. Several cruise lines had to adjust Caribbean itineraries as a result.

Florida also faces a hurricane threat as tropical storm Ian strengthened as it moved over the Caribbean on Saturday. It could approach Florida early next week as a major hurricane.
