A €12 million investment by the Catalonia Tourist Board aims to establish the Spanish region as a leading destination for wine and gastronomy tourism.
The “unprecedented” spend will allow Catalonia to accelerate the development of its wine and food industry in three years rather than taking a decade.
The tourist board estimates that travellers interested in wine and food tourism tend to spend 3.5 times more when visiting Catalonia.
The regional government will create infrastructure to bring new specialist activities across Catalonia and consolidate its position as a top leading wine and gastro-destination and be among the top eight ranking in Europe.
The drive comes as part of a strategy to diversify the tourism offering and help drive visitors outside the shoulder season and contribute to spreading travel throughout the territory in line with a sustainable tourist model.
A new food and wine tourism campaign will be unveiled at World Travel Market London in November as well as the tourist board promoting its all-year-round tourism strategy for an area that boasts 50 restaurants with Michelin stars.
