Cruise ship helps rescue group after boat capsizes

A Carnival Cruise Line ship helped to rescue of 17 people after their boat capsized off the central American country of Belize.

Carnival Dream’s crew helped those stranded when the ship’s officers spotted the overturned boat and the group in distress.

Captain Francesco Fiorentino’s officers and crew alerted the Belize Coast Guard, lowered one of its tenders into the water in conjunction with local Belize boats, and helped to safely recover all 17 people.

Each member of the rescued group was described as being in in good condition before a transfer with the Belize Coast Guard was co-ordinated.

Carnival Dream was heading for Cozumel in Mexico as part of a six-day sailing from Galveston in Texas when it supported the rescue mission.

The ship is due back to its US home port tomorrow (Saturday).
