Spanish chain Riu Hotels & Resorts reported a 111% rise in turnover last year last year but the €2.9 billion total remained 30% below pre-pandemic 2019 levels.
The group’s 96 hotels handled six million customers across 20 countries in 2022.
Chief executive Luis Riu said he was counting on the opening of the Riu Plaza London Victoria and on further hotel renovations to continue the positive trend in 2023, despite inflation and unstable global political factors.
Other developments planned for this year include the construction of Plaza hotels in Chicago and Toronto and a property in Falmouth, Jamaica due to open in 2024.
Renovations are to take place at hotels in Mauritius, Gran Canaria, Punta Cana and Cancun.
The group opened its second Plaza hotel in New York in 2022 and its first in west Africa in Baobab, Senegal. The company’s portfolio in Mexico was expanded to 22 hotels.
