Intrepid emergency appeal breaks $250,000 mark

An emergency appeal by Intrepid Travel’s fundraising arm has so far collected more than $250,000 to help rural communities devastated by the earthquake in Morocco.

The Intrepid Foundation appeal – which went live over the weekend – had reached more than $186,000 by Monday, just three days after the tragedy.

That figure had risen to more than $255,000 by today (Tuesday). Intrepid has pledged to match the first $100,000 raised.

The breakthrough to $200,000 was disclosed by the company via Twitter/X last night, with the figure increasing since.

It will support long-term local NGO partners in Morocco, Education for All, which aims to educate young women from rural communities, and the High Atlas Foundation.

Both are working with local communities to provide those impacted with essential provisions such as food, shelter, clean water and medical supplies.

Speaking on a Travel Weekly webcast, Intrepid chief executive James Thornton said funds raised would go “directly to the two projects” and urged more people to donate.

He said: “Those two projects have been absolutely devastated. At this point, it’s a great way to get money to the people who need it most at this most difficult time so I’d really encourage everyone to visit the Intrepid Foundation as a way to be able to give back to the people that need it most during this most difficult time.”

The Intrepid Foundation has been running for 21 years and has raised nearly $15 million for NGOs worldwide in that time, added Thornton.

Meanwhile, independent travel agency 7Seas Holidays aims to raise £5,000 to support relief efforts for those affected by the Morocco earthquake.

The southwest London agency, which is a member of Elite Travel group, started a JustGiving fundraising page on Sunday on behalf of the Humanity First UK charity.

Humanity First is working in co-ordination with local authorities to assess the situation on the ground to support victims.
