Royal Caribbean International is to maintain calls into its Labadee beach resort in Haiti despite the Foreign Office warning British travellers not to visit the country.
The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office issued advice against all travel to Haiti on Wednesday due to the “volatile” security situation in the Caribbean island nation.
The FCDO described the security situation in Haiti as remaining “highly unpredictable”, adding that the situation could worsen further due to an ongoing political crisis in the country.
It added: “If you choose to travel to or stay in Haiti against FCDO advice, you should monitor local media and make sure you have robust contingency plans in place.
“Be vigilant at all times, keep others informed including family and friends of your travel plans and consider your necessary routes in advance.”
UK government officials use an armoured vehicle and close protection when visiting the capital of Port-au-Prince, according to the FCDO.
The US cruise line’s resort is located on the north coast of Haiti, some distance away from the capital, with 20 calls due to be made this month by eight ships carrying thousands of passengers.
Those stopping at Labadee are Oasis of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, Jewel of the Seas, Grandeur of the Seas, Vision of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas.
A Royal Caribbean International spokesperson said: “The safety of our guests and crew is our top priority.
“We work closely with governmental authorities around the world and are aware of the recent FCDO travel advice for Haiti.
“At this time, we have made no itinerary changes to our calls into Labadee.
“We continuously monitor the situation on the ground and make adjustments as needed to ensure the wellbeing of our guests and staff.”
