CYPRIOT
operators have hit out at ITV’s Wish You Were Here holiday programme after a
presenter urged holidaymakers to steer clear from Cyprus.
Former
Thomson director Russell Amerasekera told viewers they may be better off going
to Florida as worries persist over destinations close to the Middle East.
Cyplon
Holidays managing director Harry Hajipapas said he was “very disappointed” to
hear the comments advising travellers to consider other destinations.
He said:
“It goes against Foreign and Commonwealth Office advice that states Cyprus is a
safe destination.”
The TV
presenter’s comment coincided with the Association of Greek-Cypriot Travel
Agents calling for drastic action to help Cyprus as nervous holidaymakers spurn
the island.
