WTM: Terrorism warning for travel bosses at WTM – 6 Nov 2006

Industry leaders heard some painful truths today about how terrorist attacks could shape the travel trade in coming years.

Guests at World Travel Market’s invitation-only Captains of Industry lunch, attended by key industry bosses, were told terrorism will get worse before it gets better – with the travel industry one of the main targets.

The warning was delivered by Dr Marvin Cetron, president of US company Forecasting International, which has predicted events including the break-up of the Soviet Union, the reunification of Germany and the September 11 terrorism attacks.

He has worked as an advisor to every US president from John F Kennedy to Bill Clinton, as well as blue-chip companies.

Dr Cetron told industry leaders the UK is the main target for attack by terrorist extremists, followed by France. He warned no tourist destination worldwide is safe.

He said: “We’re going to have more of these attacks in future and had better make sure passengers are taken care of. The industry has got to be aware of the reality.”

His speech also included the worrying assertion the vast majority of hotels are still not prepared for an attack and do not have adequate security.

“Companies often fear that being open about security will hurt their brand. They are wrong. It will help their brand.”
And he warned no holiday destination can afford to be complacent.

“The terrorist is going to go to the area where there is least resistance, where people think: ‘I’m not going to have to worry about going here’.”

Dr Cetron was aware his speech will make uncomfortable listening for many but is unapologetic. “I know people won’t want to hear about it. They may think it’s bad for business.”

He added: “I’m not a pessimist, just a realist.”
