Royal Caribbean International’s new mega-ship Oasis of the Seas has caused a resurgence in bookings for the Caribbean.
UK and Ireland managing director Robin Shaw said the marketing for Oasis has sparked general interest in cruising the Caribbean, either on the new ship or one of Royal Caribbean’s other vessels.
Oasis will sail seven-night Eastern and Western Caribbean cruises from Port Everglades in Florida from December 5.
Shaw said he expected around 10% of Britons among passengers on each cruise, attracted by the ship’s features.
He said: “The ship’s appeal transcends cultures because there are so many diverse experiences. There is casual and fine dining, passengers can go zip-wiring or just snooze in the Solarium. There is something for everyone and for all ages.
“Central Park is sophisticated and upscale, the Royal Promenade is glitzy and lively, the Boardwalk, with the carousel, is designed for fun and activity.”
Shaw said the ship had exceeded the expectations of all UK agents on Oasis this week. “Many did come with preconceptions that it was going to be too big, but everyone I’ve spoken to has been blown away by it.”
He admitted he had not really been prepared when he saw the ship for the first time, despite spending so much time looking at pictures and mock-ups as it was being built.
“There is a real wow that nothing can prepare you for,” he said.
