Outbound industry overlooked in New Year honours

The outbound travel industry has been overlooked in the Queen’s New Year honours list.

The domestic industry has been recognised with an OBE for Diane Poole, general manager, passengers, for Norfolkline Irish Sea Ferries, and an MBE for John Hick, vice-president of the British Holiday and Home Parks Association.

A number of others have been recognised for their contributions to regional tourism, while Peter Phillipson, chairman of Alton Towers and Legoland owner Merlin Entertainments Group, has been awarded an OBE for services to the leisure industry, and Airbus UK senior vice-president Brian Fleet receives a CBE for services to aerospace.

However, the outbound travel industry is conspicuous by its lack of representation.

Regional recipients include Roberta Heavens, Ken McElroy, Prudence Porretta and Callie Saxty, who receive MBEs for services to tourism in Hereford, Northern Ireland, Coventry and Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly respectively.

Previous recipients of honours from within the travel industry include Carnival UK chief executive David Dingle, who was awarded a CBE in last year’s New Year list.
