Durham Tees Valley airport announces first Spain flights for seven years

Durham Tees Valley airport is to begin its first flights to Spain in seven years next summer.

JetsGo Holidays is chartering the weekly service to Palma, Majorca, on Sundays for ten weeks from July 19, 2020.

It has created package holidays to Majorca using the flights, which can also be sold seat-only via partner operators including Classic Collection.

The flights will be operated by AlbaStar Boeing 737-800 aircraft with 189 seats.

Director Daniel Reilly said: “We are excited to introduce our Majorca holidays to the residents of the Tees Valley region and beyond. We look forward to welcoming the region’s residents back to fly on holiday from their local airport in 2020.”

The operator’s new charter is the latest growth announcement since Stobart Aviation took over operation of Durham Tees Valley in March.

Balkan Holidays began a charter from the airport to Bulgaria in May and has now confirmed that will run for a second season in summer 2020.

Durham Tees Valley airport was taken back into public ownership in January in a £40 million deal approved by Tees Valley Combined Authority, with Stobart Group coming on board as operator in March.

Tees Valley mayor Ben Houchen said: “I’m delighted to announce that flights to the UK’s most popular holiday destination will be returning to Teesside. With these flights to Majorca next year, JetsGo Holidays has become the latest company to throw its weight behind our airport.”

He added: “A big part of the reason for us buying the airport back was to support businesses, and travel agencies are crucial to that. Travel agencies take great pride in advertising flights from their local airport, so their customers will see this as a huge boost in confidence in their local travel agencies.”

Glyn Jones, chief executive of the Stobart Group, said the airport hoped to expand its route network off the back of the announcement, and said he could envisage new more services to popular Spanish destinations, such as Alicante and Malaga.

He said leisure travel was the first priority from the airport, but it will also be looking to expand its business travel offering.

JetsGo Holidays flights went on sale today. Packages are priced from £349pp with deposits from £75. Flight depart Palma at 10am local time and depart Durham Tees Valley at 1pm local time.
