Icelandic airline Play has reassured customers that a new volcanic eruption on the island does not pose a threat to infrastructure and the Keflavik International Airport remains open.
A new eruption began in the Fagradalsfjall volcanic system in the Reykjanes peninsula on Wednesday, following seismic activity in the same system between March and September 2021 (pictured).
Local authorities confirmed the new eruption was near the Fagradalsfjall mountain, around 20 miles from the capital Reykjavik.
In updated travel advice, the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) said: “A small volcanic fissure eruption has begun (3 August 2022) in Meradir on the Reykjanes peninsula. There is no direct threat to populated areas. You are advised to avoid the area while the Civil Protection Agency assess the situation and not to try to visit the site.”
The statement from Play recommended potential travellers monitor the safetravel.is website for detailed information and added: “The area is being closely monitored by authorities. As of now, the eruption poses no threat to infrastructure or inhabitants in the area, as the lava flow seems to be coming from the site of the previous eruption in 2021.
“Keflavik International Airport is open and incoming flights are about to get a truly spectacular view!”
Play flies from Stansted to Keflavik five times a week.
