Prime minister Boris Johnson had been planning to raise the matter in a meeting with president Joe Biden on Tuesday.

The announcement is expected to cover those who are fully vaccinated, with travel reopening in time for Thanksgiving.

The FT said the announcement, once confirmed, “comes at the start of the UN General Assembly in New York and marks the culmination of weeks of intense diplomacy between Washington, London and Brussels”.

The BBC reported that airline shares had risen on the news.
