BAA holds negotiations overmanagement of New York hubs

BAA has started negotiations to operate, manage and develop New York’s JFKand LaGuardia airports.

Heathrow and Gatwick’s owner is the sole company talking to the City of New York after beating off challenges from rival companies including Amsterdam Schiphol and Zurich airports.

The current operator of JFK and LaGuardia, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, is due to run the airports until 2015 from when BAA is expected to take over.

However, New York’s mayor Rudy Giuliani has hinted current contracts could be terminated earlier to give BAA an early start.

He acknowledged the airports were not up to the same standard as rival international hubs and has accused the Port Authority of being unwilling to raise service levels. Passengers have long complained of poor service, especially at immigration.
