West Welcomes the World to Winter Olympics

SEVEN western US states are hoping to benefit from the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The seven – Idaho, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah – have formed a tourism marketing partnership to promote year-round travel to the western region of the US. The partnership, called Intermountain West, will be launched this autumn for three years to get maximum exposure from the games.

Utah Travel Council director Dean Reeder said: “The Olympics are more than Salt Lake City and 17 days in February 2002; they transcend state borders. Our neighbouring states have much in common as both summer and winter destinations, as well as in their history and culture. This marketing programme enables us to portray the West as the stunning destination that it is.”

Reeder added that the campaign, called The West Welcomes the World, will highlight the region’s diverse culture and history, adventure and activity opportunities and its national parks and monuments. The campaign begins immediately after the closure of the Summer Olympics in Sydney and is supported by a number of initiatives.

These include Intermountain West visitor information centres throughout the participating states, a regional travel planner and a Web site featuring information.

n Tickets for the Winter Olympics, starting on February 8 2002, go on sale from this October. There will be 1.5m available, 45% allocated to Salt Lake Olympic Committee’s contractual partners and the remaining 55% sold domestically. US retailer Cartan Tours has been designated as the authorised travel company of the US Olympic Committee. See www.cartan.com.

On course: Deer Valley will be one base for the Winter Olympics
