Fred Olsen moves Black Prince due to new year overcrowding

FRED Olsen Cruise Lines claims Funchal will be so overcrowded with cruiseships this new year that it has decided to reposition Black Prince in Tenerife.

The ship will now visit the Portuguese port earlier in its 16-night itinerary and spend new year in Santa Cruz instead.

Marketing director Nigel Lingard said: “The company discovered that in addition to its 450-passenger cruise ship Black Prince being booked into Funchal for the firework celebrations, another 10 ships were also booked in.

“Of these 11 ships, eight, including Black Prince, had been assigned anchorages outside the main port. This meant Black Prince passengers would have faced a lengthy and uncomfortable tender journey amongst the other cruise ships and their tenders in order to reach the shore.

“Fred Olsen has take the view that its passengers would prefer to be in less crowded surroundings, and in a port where they can stroll on shore as and when they wish, not when the next tender is running.”

Black Prince’s Christmas and New Year cruise departs Southampton on December 20.
