ATMA set to decentralise operations

THE Asia Travel Marketing Association is decentralising its operations and handing over responsibility for marketing and funding to local chapters.

The move has led to the axing of Peter Haworth’s international marketing director role. He will leave at the end of June. He said the changes were being made to cut down on administration and to give members more scope for commercial activities.

The changes will lead to the opening up of membership to any Asian tourist office or commercial organisation which may wish to participate in marketing activities. China, Malaysia and Singapore are among the countries being targeted.

ATMA currently has Japan, Korea, Macau, Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand as members. Major airlines, hotel groups, cruise firms and tour operators are also a part. The expanded membership could lead to a reduction in fees.

Chris Lee, the marketing and public relations manager for the Tourism Authority of Thailand, who is poised to become chairman of the ATMA in the UK, confirmed there will be a review of fees. “We will have a new formula next year,” he said.
