Gateway cities line up for northern exposure
Great Lakes states gain from new services
THE Great Lakes of North America – lakes Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario – form the largest fresh-water areas in the world and offer 11,000 miles of coastline.They are beginning to receive greater exposure in tour operators’ programmes through more gateway air services, such as Continental Airlines’ daily non-stop flights between Gatwick and Cleveland in Ohio. Chicago in Illinois and Detroit in Michigan are other growing options. Apart from tailor-made, self-drive touring itineraries combined with outdoor recreational pursuits, other product includes special-interest trips and short breaks in some of the lesser known Great Lakes areas and cities.
