Letter of the week
Airtours, we can’t keep up
It’s all well and good for Airtours to give us an ultimatum of increased sales deadlines to provide us with second-edition summer 2001 brochures free of direct contact details. Can they explain to us how they expect us to do that when we make the effort to promote and sell an Airtours holiday only for our clients to be told to book their next Airtours holiday with Going Places? This was the advice the Airtours reps were giving clients on a return transfer in Majorca recently, one of whom is a relation to a member of staff.
It’s also something of a marathon to compete with their own shops when the commission and the discounts are greater through them and other selected multiples/miniples. It has to be unfair competition when the major operators are selling their own holiday brands to the general public at a much cheaper price than other agents can purchase for the same holiday.
In an ideal world there should be a governing body to control and act on all this, but then that’s another letter.
I am probably living in dreamland to imagine how much fairer it would be if all the major operators offered the same commission and promotions to every travel agency. They are unlikely to lose any money and benefit from a much wider market and far less discrimination. That will be the day.
