Survey shows security tops agenda for women travellers
Report by HELENCONWAY
FEELING safe and secure is the key concern for women travellers when it comes to choosing a hotel, according to a survey conducted by Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts.Women who responded to a questionnaire at the 300-room Pan Pacific San Francisco said they wanted female staff to be available to escort them to their rooms and to deliver room service requests.
They also wanted hotel concierge staff to be able to give advice on safe venues to dine alone at. Commenting on the responses, hotel general manager Volker Ulrich said security was clearly a very important issue for female guests.
“Hotels have a duty to ensure all their guests feel comfortable and at ease but to do so in a way which ensures that women are not segregated,” he said.
The survey also showed that when it comes to room service, female guests prefer lighter dishes on the menus and want the mini-bar to be stocked with small bottles of wine.
Meanwhile, Pan Pacific Hotels and Resorts has improved its Web site (www.panpac.com) to make it easier to make on-line bookings at its 19 properties.
Floor plans and capacity charts have been introduced to give additional information to meeting planners.
Pan Pacific currently receives 4% of its business on-line after introducing the facility in September 1998. In the first two months of this year, Internet bookings for the group were treble the same period last year.
Agents who make on-line bookings are guaranteed the same level of commission they would earn from using global distribution systems or making phone bookings.
