take a break
Lunn Poly managing director Nigel David seems like a nice bloke and I’ll be sorry to see him go. He’s always been genuinely friendly and helpful to the press and seems to have some decent ideas to try to keep the multiple ahead of the game. But he will be taking a break – permanently – from the industry in two years’ time.David has pledged to quit in two years unless the industry ends its price obsession which, incidentally, his predecessors started. So that’s it then, he’s off.
Our postbag is full of letters from agents who say they’ve been begging the big guys to stop fighting on price for decades. Thomas Cook tried it several years ago and lost 30% of its business.
David says he has got the products to be able to haul the market away from price. But that isn’t enough. He hasn’t got the power to stop his rivals from discounting and nicking his market share.
