Singles market growth sparks brand additions

Report by JANE ARCHER

SOVEREIGN has expanded its Small World singles programme for next year to cater for the growing number of people travelling alone.

Business manager Anna Prentice would not discuss figures but said the operator is hoping for more than 10% growth in 2001, in line with forecasts that the singles market is growing by 15%-20% per year. Plans for a January promotion to agents are being finalised.

“We are seeing more clients taking two or three holidays a year with us so we are offering more choice,” said Prentice.

New features for next year’s brochure, which is on sale now for holidays from January to December next year, include city breaks to Reykjavik and a new ski house party in Alpe D’Huez in southern France, in addition to the existing chalet in La Plagne introduced last winter.

“We were only able to offer one week last season so we have extended this and added another resort,” said Prentice. Learn-to-ski weeks have also been added.

The lead-in ski price is £445 for seven nights’ half-board sharing a twin room.

“We will try to match people where clients choose to share,” said Prentice.

She said the house party – a villa-style break hosted by two reps – is the most popular type of holiday in the brochure as it gives clients the chance to meet other guests.

House parties are also available in Minorca, the Algarve, Andalucia in Spain, Symi in Greece and on a gulet in Turkey.

The lead-in price is £405 for a week’s house party in Andalucia. Two-weeks-for-the-price-of-one are offered on selected dates to the resort.
