BAAsets up live Web cam on Internet site

Report by LOUISELONGMAN

BAA has set up a live Web cam on its Web site to update passengers, airlines and local residents on the progress of Stansted’s £200 million terminal expansion.

The Web cam has been introduced as an additional feature on the airport’s Web site, www.baa.co.uk, and it will be updated every 30 minutes to show the regular course of Stansted’s construction work which started this year and is due for completion by spring 2002.

Expansion plans for Stansted include a doubling of its size to accommodate the rise in passengers, 72 new check-in desks, new security desks allowing passengers to pass through more quickly and more retail facilities.

A Stansted spokeswoman said: “In theory Web cams can be used to show anything from aircraft take-offs and landings to a virtual tour of the shops. A live Web cam is also a means of attracting additional visitors to the site.”

BAAclaims it is working ahead of schedule to complete the extension programme which aims to see 15 million passengers pass through the airport by 2005, despite Stansted already passing the 11 million passenger mark.

Passenger numbers at Stansted increased by 17% last month to over 1.3 million, compared to a 2.7% rise at Heathrow to 6.2 million and a 4.2% rise at Gatwick to 3.6 million.

In Scotland, traffic increased by 2.3% with nearly 1.5 million passengers passing through Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen airports.

European scheduled traffic increased 7.6% to nearly 4.5 million passengers last month and the long-haul North Atlantic sector rose by 1.7% to 2.1 million.
